Geometry Honors EVP

Description:

This course includes an in-depth analysis of the concepts of plane, solid, and coordinate geometry. Topics include logic and proof, parallel lines and planes, triangles, polygons, perimeter, area, volume, surface area, similarity, congruence, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. All concepts are also related to real-world phenomena.

Emphasis will be placed on developing critical thinking skills as they relate to logical reasoning and argument. Students will be required to use geometric tools and online tools to explore and discover concepts covered in the course. The honors track includes a deeper focus on critical thinking and analytical skills by providing students with more challenging problems and assignments. These elements will prepare students to be successful in future upper-level and AP courses.

Special Notes:

Students need access to a scanner or digital camera (phone is fine) in order to submit work for the teacher to review. Students will also need a TI-84 graphing calculator.

The recommended sequence for students wishing to pursue advanced math classes: Algebra 1 (8th grade) – Geometry Honors – Algebra 2 Honors – PreCalculus Honors (if taking Calculus later) – AP Calculus or AP Statistics

The honors track includes a deeper focus on critical thinking and analytical skills by providing students with more challenging problems and assignments. These elements will prepare students to be successful in future upper-level and AP® courses.

Special Instructions:

*As part of the EVP program, this course will have a live class requirement once a week at a set time; please see the website for time choices. This live class will include teaching, discussion with classmates from around the world, demonstrations, questions and answers, and other aspects of a live classroom. Students will have weekly due dates and stay on a traditional coursework schedule.

FROM THE TEACHER

Geometry is a language. It has vocabulary and grammar, sentences and paragraphs. In EVP you will have the opportunity to hear Geometry spoken in weekly live classes. Geometry is an exploration of the two and three-dimensional world we live in. Geometry is foundational to Trigonometry, Computer Animation, Architecture, Engineering and Carpentry. I think you will appreciate learning this language in concert with a team of your peers and with the accountability of weekly assignments and due dates.
