7 Ways to Beat Fashion Conformity:
By Mariah Z.D.Barton
One of the hardest things to do during adolescence is to dress properly. Finding your personal style is also a difficult task, especially when you do not know exactly what to do. The following tips will help you to begin shaping your style!
1) Watch the trends: find out what's in by looking through Fashion magazines, online, or in big city newspapers. Use what is available to you! Another good resource is the mall: window-shop or people watch! Both work well for finding out what's new and cool!
2) Check back 30 years. Talk to those who are older than you. I was on a poncho-shopping mission and with me was my mom, Grandmother, and brother. When we went back to my Grandparent's house, she told me that about 30 years prior, the “poncho-look” was in style! Styles are often only modern improvements of older designs. Rarely ever is a new style created – it's just reinvented!
3) Sew your own! Before you talk yourself into not being able to do this, think about it! You don't have to be Leonardo Da Vinci to draw out designs. By taking home-ec seriously you can learn to take patterns, redraw them, and create something that is totally yours! You can even add your own “insignia” by embroidering a symbol onto a sleeve or collar of something you have made!
4) When trying to find what style works best for you, find a celebrity that has the same hair color, face shape, or body type as you, and find pictures of them in clothing that looks good on them, that you like! Often there are magazines where stars “ spill their make-up secrets ”, and these can be helpful to you for finding out what makeup colors and products would work for you! As well, the same is often done for hair styles.
5) When you look in the mirror and clothes don't fit, it's not because you are shaped wrong. Shopping can be depressing because it feels like nothing looks right. It just means that you are not trying on the clothes designed for your body type, shape, or your height. Being adventurous when trying on clothes will help you to figure out what works best for you.
6) Remember, not every style looks good on everyone! Figuring out what works best for you will take some effort, but the reward of looking your best will be worth it!
7) Modesty clothing is not dweeby, un-cool, or gross. It's the exact opposite! Wearing clothes that cover more of you forces guys to look beyond just a pretty face or cleavage. Super-low or super-tight clothing makes them think you want action. Modest does not mean unattractive, unflattering, or ill-shaped. Instead it means that by wearing modest clothing girls can meet the right buy by making them look at your personality, which is the real you.
