Mark 7:6b-7

“This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me,

in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of me.”

Saying that Jesus is the only way (John 14:6) needs more. We can preach to someone all day long, but they may never see our Savior until we glorify Him with our actions. Honoring him with our hearts, not just words. That is so important to do, but so many times we miss it. Pictures are such an example of how much God loves us. By using our photographic talents to point to Him, we can honor him more with our actions. Giving God the glory for our talents and for the beautiful sunset, or gorgeous waterfall is so much more rewarding than taking the credit for the picture ourselves.

I just recently returned from Belize C.A. (and that’s CENTRAL AMERICA, not California (; ) with my church. We stayed a week in a small village in the jungle there. I learned so much about their culture. I found that ministry doesn’t always mean teaching Bible school. The kids seemed to associate better with touch. A hug or playing tickle with them brought more of a smile than just saying “I love you”. Teaching them a chord on my guitar or just letting them strum for me seemed to mean way more than me trying to sing my heart out leading VBS worship. Just by loving them, they could see Jesus through our group. It wasn’t that we gave materially, but that gave our hearts, letting Jesus control our attitudes and shaping us to reflect Him in all that we did. We showed our love with actions, not just words.

  1. How long have you been into photography? I have been into taking pictures since I was about 7 or 8. I got a tweety-bird camera, and that just settled it for me! Haha I didn’t get into taking an extreme amount of pictures, though, until my freshmen year of high school.
  1. Which subjects do you like to take pictures of? I’m best at landscape but working hard at my “People Pictures."
  1. What kind of camera do you shoot with? I shoot with a Nikon D-40. Great camera, but it has its flaws. (;
  1. Do you plan to use photography in your future, as in a job? I should hope so. I would love to do something in the field of journalism, so that would work. If I don’t have a job using photography, I know I’ll still take pictures as a hobby.
  1. What tips do you offer those just starting in photography? Take lots of pictures. Practice truly does make you better. Take the picture at all angles, and use all the settings as well. You never know when it could be best not to use auto.
  2. Do you have a certain “formula” for taking pictures? I always like to look at every angle before taking the picture. Using zoom to find what would look best helps as well. I also like to take 2 pictures of the subject at every angle: One zoomed in, and one zoomed out.
  1. What do you think makes a good picture? I think that it’s not the photographer that makes the picture, but the subject. The photographer plays the main part, but the subject must perform in order for the photographer to receive a good shot. I think the main thing that adds character to this shot is the metal on the window. Every piece of it has been broken off, except for one on the top of the left.
  1. What time of day do you prefer to shoot? I’ll take pictures at almost anytime of day, but the best time is dawn or dusk. That way the sun doesn’t bother you with shadows and such.
  1. What do your pictures represent or reflect? (personality, ideas, dreams, etc.) My pictures reflect my Maker. I hope that in some way, everything that I do reflects him.
  1. How do you think your pictures could help others interested in photography? I think that they could offer encouragement. I’ve gotten lots of help just by studying others’ pictures and getting ideas from them.

Tip of the day:  Have fun with it. Photography doesn’t have to always be something professional. Enjoy taking a picture of that kid’s beautiful smile, or the sunset about to dive into the ground.
