Language Arts 9 Honors

This class offers highly motivated students material that closely mirrors Language Arts 9, with an emphasis on higher level thinking skills; analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. This class emphasizes improving student communication through the composition of well-structured paragraphs building into longer projects such as personal essays and creative short stories. The Literature selections for this course include both classic and contemporary short stories, dramas, novels, and non-fiction selections. Through Literature, students encounter new vocabulary and weekly vocabulary lessons strengthen skills necessary for expanding a personal lexicon. Weekly grammar lessons emphasize foundational grammar concepts and standard usage, then these skills are practiced through composition. The curriculum in this honors class often mirrors the ENGL 100 course but with assignments being more analytical and using critical thinking.

Special Notes:

This course is a part of the honors track, and intentional focus will be on the required knowledge and critical thinking and analytical skills to prepare a student to be successful in future upperlevel and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Do you enjoy reading and discussing literature? Would you like to take your writing to a higher level? Then Language Arts 9 Honors could be a great fit for you! This class focuses on not just simply reading literature but responding to it as well; you will interact with your classmates in discussion posts to give your thoughts on what you have read. In Language Arts 9 Honors, you will work on expanding your vocabulary, responding to literature and poetry, and writing both fiction and nonfiction pieces at an elevated honors level. This class will help you develop important assets for wherever you find yourself in the future–being able to infer from others’ communication and clearly expressing your own thoughts are two skills you will use for the rest of your life.
