Middle Grade Computer Survey

Description:

In this course students develop computer and technology literacy covering nine fundamental computer strands: computer basics, internet and online communication, digital citizenship, word processing, slide presentation, spreadsheets, databases, multimedia, and keyboarding. Weekly prescriptive keyboarding is an integral part of this class. Students will focus on touch-typing, accuracy, and speed. Class activities seamlessly integrate technology into middle grade math, Bible, science, reading, language arts, social studies, and fine arts. Teacher-assigned projects will be used to make the skills and content learned applicable to students’ other courses at NorthStar Academy.

FROM THE TEACHER

The world is changing fast. With the inventions of the internet, the world we live in has become smaller. Most of our activities now take place online. Today’s teens have access to a massive amount of information fed to them through technology. There’s nothing wrong with this. However, to be able to live in this virtual world students need to understand their rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of living and working in an interconnected digital world. They need to learn how to act in and model ways that are safe, legal, and ethical.

In this course, students are guided through practical and informative video lessons and practice exercises that teach them the computer basics, internet safety, digital citizenship, word processing, spreadsheets, slide presentations, multimedia, and database terminology and uses, as well as topics ranging from cyberbullying to plagiarism. Students will also learn how to properly type with accuracy and speed to further their technological learning.

What students take away from this course will be applicable in all of their other classes, both in general disciplines and in technology electives.

If computer literacy is an area in which you need to grow, this would be a great class for you!

Student Feedback

It was a very good set up.

I enjoyed reading and responding to my classmates posts.

This was my favorite class out of all of them.
