DC AP® Language and Composition

Description:

AP® Language and Composition is designed to strengthen each student’s writing abilities to analytical and persuasive depths. Students will be studying various genres of literature and writing and responding in formal, analytical essays. These essays will demonstrate the student’s knowledge and understanding of rhetorical appeals as well as persuasive techniques present within the author’s writing. This class will help prepare the student to take the AP® exam in Language and Composition at the end of the school year, but the class will not “teach to the test.” Journalistic pieces and classic literature will be studied with deeper analytical approaches than those in other language arts classes. Students will learn how to provide evidence of rhetorical appeals and persuasion within their formal essays, by designing various formal responses.

Special Notes:

The dual credit honors track includes a deeper focus on critical thinking and analytical skills by providing students with more challenging problems and assignments comparable to what they would see at the university level. These elements will also prepare students to be successful in future upper-level and AP® courses.

The Dual Credit fee for CCU is included in the fee for this course.

FROM THE TEACHER

Do you enjoy reading and analyzing literature at deeper levels? Would you like to earn credit for university Language and Writing courses, while growing in your writing and analytical skills? Pursuing an AP® course might be the direction for you.

The AP® Language and Composition course takes readers to deeper levels of thinking and responding. What message and tone is the author trying to convey? What rhetorical devices are writers implementing to reach a certain audience? This class will allow you to study various texts, and equip you with writing skills that take you beyond standard summarized writing, into deeper, analytical exploration. From classic literature pieces, to modern-day speeches and articles, we will study author and speaker techniques and discover original intent and societal responses. We will also hold these pursuits and endeavors up to God’s standard of Truth and respond with Biblical worldviews.

As we move throughout this course, we will prepare you with skills and writing practice for the Advanced Placement® Language and Composition Exam. Through weekly writing responses and formal essays, you become better equipped as a student and as a writer.

The learning journey offered in this course can be rigorous at times, but the growth that occurs in pursuing excellence in writing and communicating will equip you as you move forward in university and after-university life. Journeying in this AP® course might just be the direction for you.
