When AI tools like ChatGPT burst onto the scene, many parents wondered how they would affect their child’s learning. These tools can be powerful, but they also raise an important question: How do we help students use AI wisely without losing sight of what matters most?
One of the best answers is simple: start conversations at home.
Why Talk About AI at Home?
- AI is already here. Whether or not they use it at school, students will encounter AI in everyday life.
- Shortcuts are tempting. Kids need guidance to see the difference between using AI as a tool and letting it do the work for them.
- Relationships matter more. AI can provide answers, but it can’t replace the wisdom, encouragement, or connection that comes from people.
Conversation Starters for Families
Here are some simple, open-ended questions you can use with your child. These aren’t about “right” or “wrong” answers—they’re about listening and learning together.
Exploring Use
- “Have you ever used an AI tool like ChatGPT or Grammarly? What was it like?”
- “If you could use AI to help with schoolwork, what would you want it to do? Why?”
Exploring Relationships
- “What feels different when you’re chatting with a chatbot versus talking with a real person?”
- “Can you think of a time when someone encouraged you in a way that really mattered? Could AI ever do that?”
Exploring Values
- “How do you think using AI might make learning easier—or harder?”
- “Do you think using AI in any way is cheating? Why or why not?”
How NorthStar Academy Supports Parents
At NorthStar, we want to partner with you as you guide your child in this new era of learning. That means:
- Encouraging students to talk about how AI has been discussed or used in their NorthStar classes.
- Hosting parent meetings focused on understanding AI and its role in education.
- Sharing insights, resources, and opportunities for discussion in the Parent Team so families can support one another.
You don’t have to navigate this alone—we are committed to walking alongside you.
The Bottom Line
AI will keep changing, but our values and relationships should remain at the center of education. By asking good questions and staying connected with their students and with NorthStar, parents can help students reflect deeply, use AI responsibly, and remember that the most important lessons in life are learned in relationship.
